Jewish Rome

Rome Synagogue and Marcellus TheatreIn Rome there is a story within the story - Jews settled in Rome as early as the 2nd century BCE and their community, one of the oldest in the world, during 21 centuries of uninterrupted and sometimes tormented presence, has left many signs.

During the Roman Empire, it was a large community with a population of at least 40,000 Jews and containing 13 synagogues. Under the popes, the Jews in Rome suffered many restrictions and had to endure countless difficulties. Between 1555 and 1870, they were forced to live in a ghetto, a restricted and small unhealthy area by the Tiber River. During the Second World War, many of them were deported.

This tour will feature visits to the Arch of Titus, the Mamertine Prison, the rose garden (an ancient Jewish cemetery by the Circus Maximus), the Portico of Octavia, the Jewish district synagogue (a major Jewish Temple) and the Jewish Museum. It is possible to extend the tour to the Synagogue of Ostia Antica and the Jewish Catacombs.
