Underground Rome
In this tour, we will explore two of Rome's most accessible subterranean sites - the Church of St. Clemente and the Roman Houses on the Coelian Hill, below the churches of Saints Giovanni and Paolo.
The visit will start at the St. Clemente Basilica, a splendid medieval church rebuilt in the 12th century, after the previous one was destroyed when the Normans sacked the city. This basilica is very special since it has two underground levels dating back from different periods that we can visit - the upper level is an early Christian church, and lower level consists of two ancient Roman buildings dating to the first and second century AD.
Next we'll visit the Roman Houses on the Coelian Hill, located under the Basilica of the Saints John and Paul. Here we will explore two different houses perfectly preserved below the medieval church. More than 20 frescoed underground rooms reveal how the use of these two buildings changed in the past centuries.
Much of Rome's long history can be discovered in its depths, still hiding rich memories of its past. Many itineraries of subterranean sites can be tailored for you apart from the one described here.
